Learn the Timeless Art of being an Auctioneer
Canadian Auction College February 5 until February 10, 2011 at the Days Inn, Bryne Drive, Barrie
Many things have changed in the world of being an Auctioneer, but one traditional thing will never change – the engaging art of being an Auctioneer. Auctioneers are best known for their ‘chant’, the rhythmic mixture of words, numbers and individual styles that all contribute to an auctioneers bid calling style.
It will be this art that students at the Canadian Auction College will be working hard to develop, during their week at the school. From February 5 until February 10th, 2011 students will not only learn the fundamentals of bid calling and the steps to a successful auction career. Like preachers, the auctioneer uses vocal performance to generate momentum. Unlike preachers, though, the auctioneer will use numbers, filler words and anything else they are able to throw in the string of sounds strung together in rapid succession to fill in the gaps between bids.
In 1964 country singer LeRoy Van Dyke recorded a pop hit The Auctioneers Song, about his cousin who makes good as an auctioneer. Auctions have moved away from many of the old fashioned styles of former times. Most progressive auctioneers are moving into the electronic age. Many are already utilizing online broadcasting of auctions via the internet. They accept online bids as the live auction is taking place, essentially bringing the world into the auction. It gives auctioneers the ability to maximize value for the seller, which is who they are working for. It also gives buyers the chance to participate in auctions they normally couldn’t attend – or to stay warm and dry while bidding from the comfort of home on a cold winter day. Even with modern technology the auctioneer remains a vital part of the auction sale.
Instructors at this week long course include four World Champion Auctioneers and leading professional auctioneers and business people from across the province. Everything from developing their own personal chant, voice care and small business skills, the program of classes and practice sessions have been described as ‘a life changing experience and the best week of my life’.
The highlight of the week will be at 6:00 PM on Wednesday February 9th when the graduate auctioneers present a live auction, open to the public, friends and family at the Days Inn, Bryne Drive, Barrie. The students will sell their first items, and invite you to attend.
We invite representatives from the media to attend the entire course, or to sit in on some of the classes, spend a day with us, to find out…that auctioneering is much more than fast-talking!
